THE BUSINESS CASE FOR OPEN BUILDING

UPDATE - NEW DATE TO BE ANNOUNCED, Tolhuistuin, Amsterdam-Noord
OpenBuilding.co, Fakton Capital, ARCAM

‘It seems like a question of time before open building will be the standard’, Elsbeth Grievink writes in the article Nieuw: maak kennis met flexibele huizen (‘New: get to know flexible housing’) in the national financial newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad on 5 February 2020. ‘Things will have to change’, Grievink continues and points at laws, legislation and new financial scenarios. And exactly this will be the topic of the next event organized by OpenBuilding.co in Amsterdam: the financial design of Open Building concepts. A new date will be announced as soon as possible.

Research and debate, organized by OpenBuilding.co and Fakton Capital - tickets via ARCAM

The event ‘The Business Case for Open Building’ is a joint initiative by OpenBuilding.co, Fakton Capital and ARCAM. The event will be a follow-up on the evening in October where Marc Koehler – in his role as ARCAM Architect in Residence -  and other Founding Partners of OpenBuilding.co talked about the principals of Open Building and the opportunities to build a resilient, sustainable and flexible city for the future following N. John Habraken’s line of thought. During the panel discussions that night, the financial aspects of Open Building where debated on several occasions. OpenBuilding.co initiated research into the topic, of which the first results were presented during the World Architecture Festival in December. The next steps in this research will be presented in the course of 2020. They will be discussed with representatives of the municipality of Amsterdam, investors and real estate developers.

A new way of working together

Following the principles of Open Building, the partners in OpenBuilding.co work towards a sustainable living environment by developing and designing buildings with a long-lasting value for society, taking various perspectives into account: social, ecological and financial. The current climate crisis and demand for affordable housing not only ask for new ways of designing and building, but also need new ways of calculation and financing. De changing role of users/residents (individuals as well as cooperations) and the transition towards a circular economy ask for new ways of working and collaboration with all stakeholders in the chain of real estate.

Researching the business case for Open Building

During the event, we will discuss technological developments and new design principles in relation to the changes in the financial market (including fintech) and the influence of the (local) governmental regulations. What developments will enhance the principles of Open Building and accelerate developments? Open Building is a complex design task, a new way of organizing the different cycles in the built environment. Is it possible to use the principles of Open Building to design new Open Urban Development?
